Our Philosophy

Starting with our first trip to Puerto Rico in 1990, Global Works has held a strong belief that community service is at the heart and soul of our programming.  While many organizations seek to tack on projects or have added community service programs to their repertoire in recent years, service based programming has been who and what we are and have always been.

We believe that service projects are not something that should be done for the sake of “laying the golden egg” or “counting hours.”  We believe that well designed and executed service projects are done with and not just for communities.  Furthermore we believe quality service projects provide a bridge for meaningful cultural exchange activities and language learning opportunities.

While no doubt much can be learned from books and classrooms, we also feel passionately that there is no substitute for the profound lessons of traveling and interacting first-hand with other cultures around the world.  We are inspired and driven by the feedback from students and community members who have exclaimed how our trips have changed their world views, improved their language skills, and fostered a new appreciation for what they have at home.  Our participants don’t just take home photos and souvenirs but rather exchange new friendships, accomplishments, and laughter with communities and people around the world.

We thank all those past, present, and future who support our mission of “fostering personal growth and promoting social and cultural awareness for our students and the communities they serve."

Testimonials

This was the summer of a lifetime and I can't imagine anyone this program would not appeal to!

Amanda Levine, Puerto Rico Participant

Wonderful adventure! I learned to appreciate and enjoy a foreign culture while traveling on my own. I enjoyed speaking Spanish in a Spanish-speaking country -- the people appreciate an American who tries to speak their language.
