Days 1-2: Panama City

We arrive into Panama City, a cosmopolitan capital that has long been a crossroads of the world. We will tour Casco Viejo, the historic heart of the capital and visit the artisan and fish markets. We will explore the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute's Exhibition Center and the trails just minutes from the city center where toucans, sloths, and monkeys are frequently sighted. We will view the massive ships passing through the Miraflores Locks while learning about the fascinating history of the Panama Canal. We will also participate in some informal language games and team building activities, so please come with a desire to use your Spanish!

Days 3-6: Chirriqui Province Homestay

Chiriquí Province, in the northern region of Panama, is a mountainous paradise known for its ideal climate, small friendly agricultural communities, and spectacular scenery and wildlife. From Panama City we travel by bus to our small homestay village in the Chirriqui Province. For the next week, we have the opportunity to live, work, and play with the exceptionally hospitable people of this community. Students live two students to a home. The members of the host families do not speak English, so our Spanish language learning curve rises quickly! Upon arrival, we greet our homestay families and head to the welcome fiesta. The evening includes introductions of students and families, dinner, music, and dancing.

Days 7-8: Pacific Coast Beaches and Surf Camp

We travel to the Pacific Coast beaches of Palmar, famous for its unique combination ocean settings and easy access to the highland adventure mecca of El Valle. We spend a couple days of, boogie-boarding, and/or surfing. The opportunity exists to challenge ourselves with surf lessons taught by professional surfer instructors. There are also options to try zip-lines, mountain biking, or hike to amazing waterfalls and hot springs in the town of El Valle.  Time here is certain to be an experience of a life time.

Days 9-10: Return to Panama City and Departure

We fly out of Panama City. Before departing for the US, however, we will enjoy a farewell celebration. Our friends and family greet us when we arrive to share our new experiences. It is the end of a trip, but a beginning to a new awareness about yourself and new cultures.

Please note that some of the locations and activities may change, but will but will be similar to those listed.

Days : *Optional Add-On~ San Blas Islands/Kuna Yala Region

During our stay on the island of Carti we will be welcomed by the tribal council as we embark on a variety of meaningful service projects with the school and other community organizations. A boat and snorkel excursion around the islands allows us time to enjoy the tropical scenery and beaches. We’ll leave the community of Kuna Yala feeling a further connection and understanding of this fascinating culture and the spectacular landscape surrounding them.
