Four Corners

Sample itinerary—these will vary for each school group depending on length of trip, desired activities and budget.

Day 1

Departure for the Four Corners Region of the United States | Travel to beautiful, rustic mountain lodge outside of Durango, CO

Day 2

White water rafting on the Animas River or day of rock climbing/hiking with experienced guides | Return to lodge for dinner and evening activities

Day 3

Environmental service projects with Forest Service. Work includes: river restoration to prevent soil erosion, site beautification, and trail maintenance | Hike in the afternoon, explore an area of the San Juan mountains | Return to lodge in evening; introduction to regional Native American art, language, and history

Day 4

Spend day in the Ute Mountain Tribal Park; projects in the morning, tour of park in the afternoon | Evening is spent preparing for community stay with the Ute Tribe. Discussions on culture, etiquette, and the politics surrounding Native Americans

Day 5

Depart Durango for the reservation| Arrive to community, welcome dinner, meet community | Group stays together in nearby lodge or hotel

Day 6

Start community service projects. Projects include: constructing a play-ground, maintaining schools, building a traditional hogan, or assisting projects in the tribal park| Evening activity with group and possibility of traditional dance lessons

Day 7

Collaboration on projects continues | Baseball or volleyball game with local teenagers | Evening activity with community

Day 8

Adventure and fun day with community | Afternoon is spent preparing the final dinner for our gracious hosts | Farewell dinner, talent show, speeches

Day 9

Sad good byes and promises to stay in touch | Depart for home

Service Projects

  • Work with the Forest Service on campground reclamation and fire prevention
  • Construct and paint local homes on Native American reservation
  • Partner with Head Start program working with Native American children
  • Engage in trail maintenance and other work in Ute Mountain Tribal Park

Adventure and Cultural Activities

  • Raft the Animas River
  • Mountain biking and hiking
  • Participate in traditional Native American ceremonies
  • Tour the Ute Mountain Tribal Park and ancient Anasazi cliff dwellings
  • Interact with local communities
