Sample itinerary—these will vary for each school group depending on length of trip, desired activities and budget.
Day 1
Meet in San Diego to start the journey; depart early morning | Van ride to Bahía de Los Angeles, a fishing village on the Sea of Cortez | Stay at a sea turtle conservation and research camp | Meet project director and settle into our palapas, three-walled cottages on the beach
Day 2
Tour of Turtle Conservation Project and discussion with biologists | Start research projects and volunteer work with turtles | Explore tide pools along coast | Hike Coronado Volcano in afternoon
Day 3
Continue work projects in morning | Take pangas, or small boats, with local fisherman to explore the coast and vast marine life: dolphins, whales*, sea lions, whale sharks, ospreys, and pelicans | Snorkeling possibilities if the weather is warm!
Day 4
Spend day in town at local school; cultural exchange with school children and community projects | Optional activity: Visit the Mission San Borja; a partially restored Jesuit mission with fruit trees, olive groves, and beautiful grounds | Afternoon hike in the desert; explore abandon silver mines and pre-hispanic rock art
Day 5
Depart Bahía for Laguna San Ignacio | Welcome by the Aguilar family | Discussion on Gray Whales and Conservation issues in the area
Day 6
Spend morning on the boat | Watch and touch friendly mother and calf whales | Folk music show and dancing in the evening
Day 7
Spend morning on the boat with whales | Afternoon in community for school exchange, English lessons, etc. | Dinner and talent show with local community
Day 8
Depart Laguna de San Ignacio for town | Hike to nearby mountains to visit archeological sites, cave paintings, and rock art | Spend night at B&B; swim in a nearby lake
Day 9
Early morning departure for van ride back to San Diego | Spend evening in San Diego
Day 10
Depart for home
*Whale watching season is February through the 3rd week of March!
