Q: How many people do we need for a private trip?
A: Currently, groups need at least 14 paying participants for a private program. Families and adult groups are an exception.

Q: Do trip coordinators have to pay?
A: No, two chaperones are included free with a group of 14 paying participants. A larger group may result in more free chaperones.

Q: What happens if I have only a few interested participants?
A: If your group falls short of fourteen paying participants, we will make every effort to help match your group with another through our optional 'Match a Trip' program.

Q: Is there a Global Works leader with our group at all times?
A: Yes! Each group will have a full time Global Works leader with them at all times throughout the trip. Typically, leaders meet the group in country.

Q: How much does a trip cost?
A: Our trips are priced based on the destination, length of stay, and number of participants. Typically the larger your group size, the less expensive tuition will be per person.

We have no problem telling you how much a program costs. You will find no hidden fees, membership fees, etc.

To get a price on a potential trip, simply provide us with some information on our Plan a Trip Form, and we will respond as soon as possible with your tuition.

Q: What is included with tuition?
A: All meals, accommodations, in country transportation, activities, and tips are included in tuition. The only added expense would be for spending money, meals in airports, and departure taxes from the destination country (if applicable). Please note that a portion of tuition will also be used for service project supplies, coordinators, and donations.

Q: Where do we stay?
A: We provide safe and comfortable lodging for the duration of your trip. We seek out authentic and locally run lodges, hostels, and hotels whenever possible. Rustic accommodations can be expected in many locations. Typically groups are in rooms of 3- 4 divided by sex.

Q: Is the Food/ Water safe?
A: Safety is our number one priority. Potable water will be made available to the group at all times. We work carefully to select restaurants and closely advise our homestay families on proper food preparation. Careful consideration is given to any dietary restrictions and allergies.

Q: What if I need to cancel?
A: Please refer to our cancellation policy included in our Participant Agreement forms needed for enrollment. We strongly recommend you purchase cancellation insurance.

Q: Does CGT provide airfare?
A: Yes, until we know for sure that your group is going and how many participants there will be, it is impossible for us to guarantee an airfare rate. As soon as the final numbers are in, we work with our travel agency to purchase a group rate for the everyone.

Q: What kind of community service projects do we do?
A: We collaborate with grassroots organizations and local communities on a variety of environmental and development projects. Working side-by-side with our hosts, we participate in varied projects designed to impact each community positively.

Examples of previous projects include: constructing a foundation for a community center, building homes, planting an organic garden, helping a local school teacher during class, painting a classroom mural, and assisting marine biologists with sea turtle habitat preservation projects.

Students and teachers should expect to work 3-8 hours a day (depending on the project) during the program

Q: How many community service hours will I receive?
A: You can expect between 15- 30 certified community service hours depending on the length of trip and itinerary.

Q: How is language learned on a CGT program?
A: We believe that the most effective way for students to acquire a second language is through meaningful real world interactions. By providing authentic opportunities for exchange through homestays, informal instruction, and interactive cultural experiences, our programs foster engaging, supportive environments and valuable tools for any level of language learning. We do have formal language instruction options on some of our programs if desired.

Our complete Language Immersion Program details are available upon request.

Q: How are homestay communities and families selected?
A: Global Works has been committed to providing secure and meaningful homestay experiences for 16 years. Our communities are typically rural and feature a strong community spirit.

Safety is our primary consideration when selecting communities and families. In addition, we search for families who have the desire to partner with our groups in service work and cultural exchange.

Most families live in humble, but sanitary homes and are committed to providing a caring, secure environment for our participants. Our trip leaders and in-country directors visit communities ahead of the time, interview families, and repeatedly visit homes to determine if they will be appropriate.

Q: Do I need a passport?
A: If you are traveling on any of our international programs we require participants to have an up to date passport (watch those expiration dates!). It takes around 8 weeks to get a new passport so please plan ahead.

Q: What type of service projects do we do?
A: We collaborate with grassroots organizations and local communities on a variety of environmental and development projects. Working side-by-side with our hosts, we accomplish meaningful projects that impact each community positively. Examples of previous projects include constructing a foundation for a community center, planting an organic garden, assisting the local school teacher, painting a classroom mural, and assisting marine biologists with sea turtle habitat preservation projects.

Q: Will I have a brother and sister in my homestay family?
A: We do not guarantee children of the same age and gender, but when organizing and choosing families, we do look for ones with children, so you may have a “sister” or “brother”.

Q: What do we do during a typical day in the homestay?
A:
7:30am:Wake up and eat breakfast with your host family.
8am-9am:Meet your group at the project site for a brief language lesson and/or meeting. (Everyone will live within walking distance of the center of town and the worksite.)
9am-12pm:Work on community service projects
12pm-1:00pm:Lunch and break.
1:00-3:30pm:Resume work projects.
3:30pm:Activity with the community, soccer game, free time with host brothers and sisters, etc.
5pm-7pm:Dinner at home with host families.
7-8:30pm;Gather with group and community members for a dance, game night, festival, bonfire, and/or pot luck dinner.
9pm:Early to bed!

Q: Will my host family speak English?
A: No. The majority do not speak any English. Remember, we have told each family that you are there to practice Spanish or French. Before arriving to the homestay, we will role play some key phrases in the target language as well as some other useful communication skills. Charades, anyone?!

Q: What if there is an emergency?
A: Students will always know where their teacher and Global Works leader at all times and vice versa. Students will carry an Emergency Contact Card that has their leader’s beeper and cell phone number. If there is a problem in any home that warrants switching host families, we will organize a move.

Q: What if there is a medical emergency?
A: Global Works always has Emergency Action plans for each location that we visit. Your leader will know where the closest medical facility is and the fastest way to reach it.
