SUMMER SERVICE ADVENTURE INTERNS

Internship Objective

The Global Works Summer Service Adventure Internship provides an opportunity to learn the skills needed to plan and lead a Global Works Summer Service Adventure. The intern will gain an immersive understanding of service learning international travel programs, sustainable community development projects, trip leader facilitation, and mentorship. 

Duration

Internships are for the duration of the Summer Service Adventure program plus a day prior and a day post program. Programs vary in length from 8 to 17 days. 

Expectations and Responsibilities 

As a Global Works Summer Service Adventure intern you will be expected to: 

  • Participate in staff training in June near Boulder, Colorado
  • Communicate with home office, leaders and participants prior to the program
  • Gain extensive knowledge about the program destination, itinerary, and logistical details of travel prior to your trip
  • Fly with participants on group flights (both arrival and return). Assist in the airport on travel days (may not apply to all programs). 
  • Participate in all aspects of the program, facilitate the learning experience and encourage personal growth for both the students and oneself through team building activities and group debriefs.
  • Update Trip Journal blog posts, and social media. 
  • Build relationships; employ strong communication skills and a positive attitude or, as we like to say, buenas vibras.
  • Read, understand, and abide by the Global Works Staff Manual. Be responsible for knowing, reinforcing, and supporting the Global Works Risk Management Protocols and Guidelines, ensuring everyone’s safety and welfare, including your own. Exercise reasonable judgment at all times.
  • Complete an initial meeting with intern coordinator/home office staff member prior to the program to establish goals and expectations.
  • Complete a Performance Appraisal post-program and provide evaluation and feedback of GW Summer Service Adventures Internship 
  • Be engaged, innovative, and proactive! 
  • Develop skills and knowledge that will foster career advancement and future professional opportunities in areas like sustainable tourism, international development, business, education, non-profit management, and more. 
  • Identify personal and professional goals as they relate to the internship, participate in regular performance appraisals and self-evaluations in order to monitor goal progress.

Skills/Attributes We Expect from You

To be hired for this internship, applicants are expected to:

  • Have a high school diploma/GED or equivalent
  • Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Have the ability to work independently and as a team member
  • Have a wonder for travel and how it can lead to self-discovery, perspective, and a passion for life
  • Be highly motivated, proactive, and a problem solver
  • Have a desire to learn about and improve upon your leadership skills
  • Not be eligible to be a student on a Global Works program (ie. summer after senior year of high school)
  • Have a high degree of Spanish proficiency
  • Hold an Adult First Aid/ CPR certification. Advanced medical training (WFR/ WFA/EMT) and/ or water/lifeguarding certification are strongly recommended
  • Be enthusiastic and motivated, a nice human being; have a positive attitude and good sense of humor
  • Have a desire to be hired as a Global Works leader in the future (Note that employment after the internship is not guaranteed.)

Internship Timeline: 

  • November 10, 2023: Applications open! Applications are accepted on a rolling basis through March 2024
  • January – March 2024: Internship Interviews
  • April – May 2024: Online training and an onboarding with intern coordinator
  • June 1-3, 2024: Annual in-person staff training in Denver, Colorado
  • June – July: SSA Internships 
  • July – August: Post-internship performance appraisal/exit interview with intern coordinator

Internship Perks Include:

  • Travel expenses to staff training in Denver, Colorado 
  • All meals, activities, transportation and lodging during program dates
  • Airfare to group flight hub (does not apply if not flying on group flight)
  • Airfare to/from program destination (does not apply if not flying on group flight)

  • Stipend
    • 8-day program stipend is $280.00. 
    • 15-day program stipend is $525.00.
    • 17-day program stipend is $595.00.

Internship Benefits Do Not Include: 

  • Passport and visa fees
  • Travel Emergency Medical and Evacuation Insurance
  • Optional excursions; travel expenses during time off

FIELD STAFF: SUMMER SERVICE ADVENTURE TRIP LEADER

We are currently accepting applications for 2024 Summer Service Adventure  and Custom Group Travel Trip Leaders! Most of our openings are on our Costa Rica, France, and Puerto Rico programs in March through July, 2024.

Job Description

Summer Service Adventure Trip Leaders travel with and facilitate programming for high school or middle school student groups for our 1 to 4 week summer programs. Responsible for knowing, reinforcing, and supporting the Global Works Risk Management Protocols and Guidelines, trip leaders are proactive in providing participants with a  fulfilling, fun, and educational experience. They work to ensure everyone’s safety and welfare, including their own while facilitating the learning experience and encouraging personal growth.

General Trip Leader Roles & Responsibilities

  • Be proactive in providing participants with a  fulfilling, fun, and educational experience.
  • Ensure everyone’s safety and welfare, including your own. Be responsible for knowing, reinforcing, and supporting the Global Works Risk Management Protocols and Guidelines.  
  • Facilitate the learning experience and encourage personal growth for both the students and yourself. 
  • Attend staff training, orientation meetings, and debrief sessions.

Trip Leader Qualifications & Experience

  • Professional experience leading or facilitating groups of students, ages 12-18.
  • Direct experience traveling, living, and working in the countries/ destinations for which you apply.
  • Fluency in Spanish/ French or Spanish/ French proficiency in Language Immersion Programs as staff will be required to instruct students or navigate with the group in the country’s official language.
  • Current Adult CPR & Wilderness First Aid (WFA) certification or complete the course prior to program. Stipends to reimburse for course expenses are available upon request. (If you do not yet have this certification, please do not let that preclude you from applying!)
  • Strongly recommended but not required during the hiring process: further medical training (Wilderness First Responder, EMT), Mental Health First Aid, and water/ life-guarding certification (WSI).
  • Effective communication and organization skills.
  • Strong mentor skills and the ability to positively affect another human being’s life.
  • Ability to work effectively with peers from diverse backgrounds, be flexible, and have a sense of humor.
  • Have a wonder for travel and how it can lead to self-discovery, perspective, and a passion for life.
  • Volunteer experience with a non-profit or community- based organization or educational group.

Compensation

Trip Leaders earn $100-$130/ day plus compensation for additional responsibilities. Trip Leader may be contracted to fulfill additional responsibilities as Team Lead or Group Flight Chaperone for added compensation. Round trip flight (if not living in the program destination) is covered; all living and travel expenses covered during program dates.
