Meet the Global Works Staff
Erik brings over fifteen years of experience working as a high school educator and travel program administrator to his tenure as Global Works Director. He is a former Peace Corp Volunteer in Bolivia who received undergraduate degrees in International Studies and Spanish and an M.A. in Education from the University of Washington in Seattle. Between his years working as a high school Spanish teacher and coach, he enjoyed five summers leading Global Works programs in Costa Rica. Erik keeps his Spanish language skills fresh by coordinating our Latin America and Spain programs. Outside of work, Erik is most likely found spending time with his family or biking in Central Pennsylvania.
Our resident Kiwi from Dunedin, New Zealand, Craig joined our home office staff in 1998 after spending four years exploring the globe and working with teens each summer. In addition to his passion for travel, Craig is an avid white water kayaker, mountain biker, and skier. He brings a wealth of experience to his role as coordinator of our programs to Ireland, New Zealand, Fiji, Martinique and France!
Polly holds a Masters Degree in Spanish and Education from The University of Colorado. Polly grew up in Lancaster, PA and attended Ohio Wesleyan University where she earned degrees in Spanish and Psychology. She worked three years as a Spanish teacher at Westminster School in Simsbury, CT, and since 1998 Polly has directed student service learning programs in Costa Rica. Polly brings extensive education, travel, and logistical expertise to the Global Works team.
Fritz is an avid international traveler with three years of formal Spanish teaching experience. Fritz spent his formative years at The Loomis Chaffee School and went on to Ohio Wesleyan University where he earned degrees in Anthropology and Environmental Studies. After graduation, Fritz taught English and lived with a family in the mountain village of La Lucha, Costa Rica. He returned to teach Spanish and ESL at the Indian Mountain School in Lakeville, CT. Two years later he transitioned to Boston to work in sales and marketing. With this business experience under his belt, Fritz returned to his passion for service learning and teaching as he co-founded SOL Tours, the precursor to Global Works Custom Group Travel.
After teaching middle and high school Spanish for ten years and leading more student trips than she can count, Katie took a break from the classroom to join Global Works and to be a mom to her young son. Katie heads up our Language Immersion Curriculum development and lends a hand with marketing and programming for Global Works Custom Group Travel.
Meet the Summer Staff
In-Country Directors
Global Works in-country directors live and work in the program destination. Most of them are native to the country. In-country directors assist the home office in setting up the trips and visiting communities prior to each group’s arrival. Our in-country directors are integral in the success of our programs!
Global Works Trip Leaders
They’re inspirational! With so many returning staff (about 60% each year), we feel our staff leadership is one of our greatest strengths. Global Works continues to hire skilled, knowledgeable, fun-loving women and men who organize and lead trips according to high standards of quality, safety and, of course, fun. They are leaders chosen for: experience working with students, flexibility, organization, language skills, a sense of humor, and responsibility. The majority of our staff also works as professional educators and the average age of our staff is 30.
With at least three adult staff on each summer program, we are able to achieve a sensitive awareness to the needs of our participants and communities. Most of our programs have an additional on-site country director to serve as logistical backup for our groups while working closely with the Global Works home bases in Colorado and Pennsylvania. Each of our staff leaders must be certified in First Aid and CPR and attend our staff training in late spring. Our staff training provides an opportunity for leaders to share program ideas and educational techniques, learn safety protocols and guidelines, and gain a deeper understanding of the Global Works family and service oriented approach to programming.
