Despite its minuscule size, Costa Rica is considered to be one of the most biodiverse nations in the world. In addition to the country’s widely recognized strides in conservation and environmental consciousness, Costa Rica also stands as a model of peace and democracy in the Americas. In 1949 following a brief civil war, the nation abolished its army and reinvested in its people through education and social welfare programs that have resulted in literacy rates rivaling those of the United States and an impressive public health system. In the face of such monumental advances, underserved communities are present in the rural reaches of the country and the need for projects focusing on environmental issues, education, community and youth development, and small business initiatives allow for meaningful partnerships between community groups and Global Works.
