SAMPLE ITINERARY
Morne Rouge~ Orientation (6 days) – Upon arriving in Fort de France, we will practice our French as we exchange money, make calls home, and soak in the sights. Our private bus will take us to our “gite” (group lodge) in the northern town of Morne Rouge, stopping at a beach along the way to soak up some sun, play in the waves, or kick a soccer ball around in the sand. Our lodge overlooks the Caribbean Sea to the west and Mont Pelée to the north, and is an ideal place to get to know one another and adjust to the relaxed pace of this beautiful island. After a couple of days of orientation we’ll spend days hiking the trails of the Mont Pelée volcano overlook, visiting the historic town of Saint-Pierre, working on our French with some informal language instruction, and learning about the history and culture of this beautiful island.
La Trinité – (5 days) – After the short stay in our mountain lodge it is time to explore the coast. Stops at banana and sugar cane plantations, a fun interactive rail tour, and learning about the history of the island’s main industries will punctuate our drive south. The coastal towns of La Trinité will be home for the next five days. Here we will work on environmental and community service projects, enjoy the local music and culture, and learn to surf at one of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean.
Sainte-Anne (11 days) – From our surf and service visit to the Atlantic coast, we will travel to the southernmost point of the island and the town of Sainte-Anne. Seeing and smelling the island’s vibrant spice, vegetable and seafood markets along the way will delight our senses and provide us with ample opportunity to practice our French! Homestays will take place in Sainte-Anne where students will live, eat, and share in the daily lives of their families. Days will be spent interacting with our new friends on projects such as environmental work supporting a local sea turtle population or working alongside a local youth association. Many afternoons and evenings will consist of activities such as soccer games, dances, music, cooking lessons, and other types of intercultural exchange. Side trips include swimming and snorkeling in the paradisiacal beaches of Les Salines and hiking to the waterfalls of Saut de Gendarme. Finally, a SCUBA diving trip to the famous ‘Diamond Rock’ is sure to be a highlight!
Trois-ëlets, and Travel Home (3 days) – After sad farewells to our host families and new friends in Sainte-Anne, we will travel to the picturesque harbor town of Trois-Îlets for a final three days of relaxation, fun, and reflection. We will conclude our magical experience in Martinique with a ferry ride to Fort de France to shop for souvenirs and explore the sights of this beautiful colonial city.
A final group dinner to share laughter and stories of the past month while overlooking the glistening waters of the Caribbean will round out an incredible journey through this endearing island paradise.
