Travel Gear
To help you with the purchasing of any items that you do not already have, we have an online Pack List Store provided by the friendly folks at Gear Fetch. Your packing list is available on your login page via our website www.globalworkstravel.com, and you will find quality, competitively priced items that have been selected as the best equipment solutions for your specific destination and activities. The items below are also linked to the Gearfetch store.

What do I need to carry my belongings in?
This is a common question that we get from participants and parents. Most of you will have some form of luggage at home already and may well be able to use that. During the program students will need to carry all of their belongings from transport to accommodation. Though this is usually a short distance, it is important that students pack in such a way that they can carry all of their belongings, unassisted and possibly at times over uneven ground where wheeled luggage must be carried. A travel pack is ideal, but travel packs can be expensive and if they will not likely be used again, a duffel is a very effective and less expensive alternative. There are several types of duffel available (see below).

*Costa Rica program participants hiking Mt. Chirripo see below for specific equipment recommendations.

Travel Backpacks Travel Backpacks
These convertible backpacks have internal frames, decent suspension systems and convert to a hand-held bag. Backpack straps can be hidden behind a panel for airline travel. Most also feature a removable daypack for short excursions.

Travel packs should be between 4000 and 5500 cubic inches in Volume.

We recommend purchasing your backpack from a local store where you can be correctly fitted to your body type.

Rolling Duffel Rolling Duffel
A rolling duffel is a great way to pack. It is important however to have a rolling duffel that has shoulder straps for times where rolling the bag is not possible. Great for Airports!

A rolling duffel should be between 5000 and 8000 cubic inches in Volume

Soft Duffel Soft Duffel
Practical and inexpensive. Again it is important to have a duffel that has shoulder straps and can be carried unassisted. Note: For bags with a single shoulder strap - wider straps are more comfortable.

A soft duffel should be between 5000 and 7000 cubic inches in Volume

Sleeping Bag Sleeping Bag
For those programs that require a sleeping bag we recommend compact synthetic fill bags. Synthetic bags are less expensive, lightweight, and retain their insulating qualities if wet. A "Three Season Bag " is best and should be rated around +30 degrees.

*Costa Rica, Chirripo programs - Recommended Luggage
Due to the nature of the Costa Rica Chirripo programs and the hiking opportunities involved, students will need to bring a large pack to carry all of their belongings.

In addition, a light duffel bag will be used for storage and should be brought on the trip empty and packed inside the backpack.
Backpacks A Note Regarding Backpacks
You will need either an internal or external frame pack. All of your regular gear must fit inside this backpack and you should personally be able to carry it. An internal frame pack should have a capacity of approx. 4500 - 5500 cubic inches, and with this kind of pack, your sleeping bag is stuffed inside rather than strapped on the outside. The fit of a backpack is both individual and important. When selecting a backpack there is no substitute for the expert advice available at your local outdoor store.
