Agnes Scott College Martinique 2018

March 5, 2018

Today, we got up early and took a shuttle boat to fort de France. We went to the university of Martinique. We walked around the library and had lessons on creole and local culture. We met local students. Shared snacks. Visited the Spice market in fort de France and went to buy lunch in groups. Tonight there will be live music playing in the hotel restaurant.

March 6, 2018

Tuesday March 6th: we took the ferry back to fort de France for more shopping. Visited the town, and the monuments. Then we drove to the north of island, walked around St Pierre and had lunch near the volcano. In the afternoon, we went to the gorge de la falaise to see a natural waterfall. It was so fun.

March 7, 2018

Wednesday March 7th: This morning we drove to the birthplace of Josephine, Napoleon’s wife. We spent the afternoon in Clément plantation. An 18th century sugar factory. When we got back to the hotel, it was beach time for some or a stroll in town for the others.

March 8, 2018

Thursday March 8th: we left the hotel early to go visit a primary school in a town called Rivière Pilote, in the South of Martinique . The pupils were so cute and really happy to see us. We played lots of games with them like Simon says and duck duck goose. The headmaster had even prepared local snacks for us. The children then sang a creole song before we all said goodbye. After lunch we walked through a local garden to learn about the flowers and trees. Olivier our guide explained many of the virtues found in all the different plants. We got a chance to taste sugar cane. It was delicious. It was a great day !

March 9, 2018

We drove back to the north to take a local dance lesson called bèlè. The teacher talked about the origins of bèlè and taught us the basic moves. We finished the day at a banana museum. We saw many different varieties of banana. On our way back to the hotel we stopped to shop for souvenirs. We had our final dinner in a restaurant outside of the hotel.
