Itinerary

DAY 1: SANTIAGO ARRIVAL AND ORIENTATION

The group lands in Santiago, Chile’s capital, intellectual and cultural center. Santiago is nestled at the base of the Andes and easy for our group to navigate, whether we are walking through its riverside park or hopping on the modern subway system to explore neighborhoods such as the artsy Barrio Brasil, Lastarria and Bellas Artes.

DAYS 2-4: SANTIAGO EXPLORATION

We spend the first few days exploring the city’s mix of ultra modern and historical sites, and museums such as the Anthropology Museum, boasting artifacts from all over South America. We also concentrate on the many art spaces, galleries, cultural centers and museums throughout the city, including the at once hidden collection of art donated to President Allende when he took office in 1970, the graffiti lined streets of Barrio Brasil, and the Museum of Memory, dedicated to commemorate the victims of human rights violations during the civic-military regime led by Augusto Pinochet. We also hike the the Cerro San Cristóbal, a steep hill in Santiago giving spectacular views of the city and the surrounding Andes. There will be opportunities to check out dance, theater, and music events as well in the many creative outlets throughout the city

DAYS 5-7: VALPARAISO

Midway through the trip, we hop a short two hour bus ride from Santiago to the coastal hillside city of Valparaiso. Valparaiso offers a more bohemian vibe to the landscape of Chile. Known as the university center of the country, Valparaiso is known for its massive murals, its maze of streets winding up and down steep hills, and a history of art and poetry. We take time to visit the Parque Cultural: a former jail, transformed into a creative space organizing dance, cooking, and art classes, and housing a new art museum and theater space. We ride the hillside funiculares and hop a short coastal train ride to the beaches of Viña del Mar for a day at the beach.

DAYS 8-10: SANTIAGO ZIP-LINE ADVENTURE AND TRIP CLOSURE

After Valparaiso, we make the short trip back to Santiago for a day of hiking & zip-lining in the Andes. After a final chance to explore the city and some last minute souvenir shopping, we celebrate with a final dinner and live music with dancing.
