Itinerary

DAYS 1-2: BEIJING ARRIVAL

After an overnight flight, we arrive in Beijing. Our Global Works leader meets us at the airport and we take a bus to our comfortable accommodations, a courtyard hotel in a traditional hutong neighborhood, to rest and settle in.

DAYS 3-4: BEIJING AND GREAT WALL TOUR

We begin our exploration by visiting two iconic Chinese monuments: Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City with its plethora of sites. The day is punctuated with a traditional Peking Duck dinner- make sure you practice your chopstick skills! On Day 4, we visit the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall of China for an awesome full day. We even take a toboggan ride down from the wall!

DAY 5-7: CHENGDU SCHOOL EXCHANGE AND PANDA RESERVE

A quick flight takes us from the capital city to Chengdu, capital of Sichuan Province, where we settle into our cozy hostel. In the evening, we go for a spicy hot-pot dinner and visit the Sichuan Opera. The following day, we take an excursion to the Giant Panda Breeding Reserve to learn more about this endangered species. We also visit Leshan, home to the world’s largest Buddha, which is carved out of a mountain. It is an awe inspiring experience! Finally, it is time for our school exchange day at the local school. The students are so excited to meet us! We organize English-learning activities and play games with the students to help share more about ourselves and our cultures.

DAY 8-9: VILLAGE VISIT

Travel back in time to the ancient village of Bajiaogou via one of the few functioning steam engines remaining train in the world. This beautiful village has remained disconnected from the rest of China and, therefore, maintains the culture and architecture from China’s 1950s and 1960s. Spend the night in a renovated courtyard guest home where we will have a courtyard barbecue. Join the villagers for an evening of traditional dance, ping-pong and basketball on the village square.

DAY 10: DEPARTURE

After a final night celebration, we fly back to Beijing and straight on to home. It is the end of a trip, but a beginning to a new awareness about ourselves and new cultures.
