After learning about Cuban customs, historical overview, and what to expect on our adventure, we arrive the next morning in Havana, Cuba’s cultural epicenter, and dive right into the rich culture of this amazing country. For three days, we will explore Havana’s most prominent cultural offerings and partake in authentic, exciting activities. Learn what daily life is like for “Habaneros” and how the recent changes in American policy simultaneously complicate and simplify Cuban life. Engulfed in the colorful spirit of Havana, we take local cooking classes, converse in an exchange with local Cuban students, play pick-up soccer games, and explore a local farmer’s market!
Depart from Havana and hit the road for Playa Larga and the Bay of Pigs. Here we meet with National Park representative about forest preservation, wildlife refuge, and biodiversity in Zapata National Park. See how Cubans portray the Bay of Pigs invasion in their museum dedicated to the event. Learn about growing Cuban private entrepreneurship with a local host for the evening. Almost every home in Playa Larga hosts and feeds travelers on the private market!
The next day is spent in Cienfuegos for some art and music! Experience a beautiful performance by the Chamber Orchestra of Cienfuegos. We also partake in interactive graphic design workshop with a cooperative of artists. Later, explore the town center on bike taxis, a common mode of transportation for Cubans.
Depart for Trinidad and check-in to our ‘Casas’. Next, we meet with a local historian to learn about the history and significance of Trinidad, a UNESCO world heritage site. In the afternoon we have time to learn from a woodcarver who creates unique, immaculate portraits and visit fabric cooperative of women who specialize in needlework dating back to the 1500’s.
In Santa Clara, on the last full day, visit Che Guevara memorial, where the revolutionary’s remains lie. Next, delve a look into Cuban schools and libraries. We hit the beach next for some swimming and adventures in the warm Caribbean.
Today we leave this fascinating country richer for the experience of connecting with and learning from another culture.
