Details and Itinerary
As a group, we fly to the colonial capital city of Quito (9,500 foot elevation) and meet our Global Works leader at the airport. Upon arrival and after a short bus ride, we settle into our Bed and Breakfast and begin to orient ourselves with our new surroundings. On our first full day in Ecuador, we visit Mitad del Mundo (literally, the middle of the world)!
A trip to Ecuador would not be complete without a visit to the bustling city of Otavalo, located only a couple hours by bus from Quito. Otavalo hosts the largest indigenous artisan marketplace in the world and its colorful, artisan market is a shopper’s paradise and a wonderful opportunity to practice your Spanish and hone those bargaining skills! Settle into our cozy and secure hotel in the outskirts of Otavalo where we’ll stay for the next several nights.
We travel to a rural, authentic Ecuadorian community for Spanish learning, cultural exchange, and service opportunities. During the days, we work alongside our host brothers and sisters on service projects that community members determine and coordinate with us prior to the trip. Some examples of previous community projects include, building the foundation to a community center, working in the cooperative garden and plant nursery, constructing a school library, teaching English at the primary school, painting a mural in a school classroom, and working on reforestation and conservation projects. In the afternoons, we explore the rain forest, go for hikes, play soccer and basketball, engage in Spanish activities, and spend time with the community members.
It’s time to return to Quito for our final night in Ecuador. We take a tram ride to a beautiful vista above the city surrounded by towering volcanoes. We return to our hotel to enjoy a farewell celebration and dinner before boarding a flight home the next day. Our friends and family greet us when we arrive to share our new experiences.
