Details and Itinerary
The group flies into Managua, Nicaragua and meets their group leader at the airport. The indigenous Nahuatl people called Managua “Mana-ahuac”, the city surrounded by water. We’ll learn quickly how this city earned its name as we get our first glimpse of majestic Lake Managua. In nearby Granada, we’ll get settled in our hostel and begin orientation and language activities. The spirit of the country provides the backdrop for us to bond as a group, learn some key Spanish phrases, and prepare for the community service adventure that lies ahead!
During the days in Granada we explore historic and cultural landmarks in the area and speak with an expert on Nicaraguan history. We meet with our partner “Witness For Peace” and visit a nearby center and home for former street kids. Their mission is to support peace, justice and sustainable economies in the Americas. We learn about the organization and connect and play with youth during projects and games.
An early morning departure carries the group two hours a the rural community in the department of Villa de Carmen. We settle into our beautiful lodge and participate in community based projects, cultural activities and excursions. We get to work and assist with clean water initiatives and local school infrastructure repair projects. There is ample time to practice Spanish with local students during games and activities.
Arrive at a gorgeous Pacific beach and hotel for some friendly waves and introductory surf lessons. Our professional surf instructors make sure we make the most of the opportunity. That night, we enjoy a bonfire on the beach. The final trip back to our hotel in Granada allows us to share our memories before we fly home. A celebratory dinner at a nice restaurant and an ‘awards ceremony’ serves as reflection upon our time together.
