Details and Itinerary
The group flies together into Managua, Nicaragua and meets their Global Works leaders at the Augusto C. Sandino International Airport. The relaxing crater lagoon, Laguna de Apoyo, awaits the group a short hour drive away where they will spend their first night. We settle into our lagoon front accommodations and spend the day learning about some of the environmental challenges Nicaragua is facing.
Travel north near Matagalpa and into the lush forest and community of Peñas Blancas. We volunteer with ArteSana Foundation, a non-profit whose mission is to support health through sustainable agriculture, permaculture, and water projects. Global Works students learn about and work alongside the volunteers on health education and rainforest ecology projects. We also tour a coffee farm, learn about the effect coffee growing has on rainforest devastation, and participate in reforestation initiatives. A bonus is a visit to the town’s water source, a majestic waterfall!
Travel next to a rural coastal town on the Pacific. Here we link up with a conservation organization to provide turtle egg monitoring and counting. Opportunities exist for a nocturnal turtle watching hike depending on the season. We stay at a nearby eco-lodge located in a dry tropical forest. We learn about this important ecological system and observe the wildlife present in this critical migratory corridor.
We hit the beach on the last day for some down time and an option for surf lessons on a mellow beach break. The final trip back to our hotel in Granada allows us to share our memories before we fly home. A celebratory dinner at a nice restaurant and an ‘awards ceremony’ serves as reflection upon our time together.
