Details and Itinerary
We fly into the capital city of Managua, which the indigenous Nahuatl people called Mana-ahuac, the “city surrounded by water.” A private bus transports the group to Laguna del Apoyo, our lake-side ‘base’ hotel for the upcoming week and initial education and orientation activities.
The next morning we meet the folks of an incredible local organization, Witness for Peace, for a informative tour of historic and modern-day Managua and discussions with local women about the issues facing Nicaraguans today. On Days 3 through 5, we participate in a variety of service projects with local non-profit groups. One program connects upper class teens exhibiting leadership skills with disadvantaged, elementary-level girls in a mentorship relationship. Another action-oriented program, provides female artisans with tools to strengthen their small businesses and provide for their families. Each evening, we return to the lake-side base for an optional swim or kayak in the lagoon, a delicious dinner, and evening reflection activities.
We transfer to the beautiful city of Granada where we settle into a locally-owned hotel. We’ll explore the cobblestone streets, plazas, churches and other highlights. Part of our time here we will be engaged with UPNicaragua- a grassroots effort to economically & emotionally empower Nicaraguan girls. We participate in a workshop with some of the girls and get to meet the inspiring people behind UPNicaragua.
Visit Nicaragua’s first and largest National Park to visit Volcán Masaya for an incredibly scenic trek and a greater understanding of the areas geological and indigenous significance. That night we return to our hotel
closer to the airport for a final celebratory dinner and reflection. With new confidence, knowledge, and open hearts, we prepare for our trip to come to an end. On Day 8, the group departs on a flight home to share this amazing experience and continue the collaborations we established with our new Nicaraguan friends and partners.
