Itinerary

DAYS 1- 2: ARRIVAL AND ORIENTATION

The group flies into Panama City, meets their Global Works leader, and takes a short bus ride to our cozy hotel in the heart of the city. The next morning we have a brief orientation to Panama, visit Casco Viejo, participate in a scavenger hunt, and learn about this older part of the city and it’s architecture. In the afternoon we stop off at the Miraflores Locks and learn about the awesome engineering feat that is the Panama Canal.

DAYS 3-5: KUNA YALA ISLANDS

We are picked up at the hotel and transported to the San Blas Islands, an archipelago governed by the Kuna Yala indigenous people. The Kuna have autonomously governed the islands since the 1920s and have maintained their distinctive dress, music, dance, and legends. While staying on a rustic but gorgeous private island, we spend the next few days engaged in cultural exchange activities with school children on Carti Island, participate in workshops on Kuna cooking, mola weaving, dancing, and dug out canoe races. We also enjoy a guided snorkel and boat excursion around the turquoise water.

DAYS 6-8: SANTA FE HOMESTAYS

We travel through jungle-covered hills and climb to our highland homestay community perched at the edge of a national park. Students typically stay two students per home with carefully selected families. Spend the next few days working on meaningful sustainable service projects with the schools. Tube down the river and enjoy a night hike with a local expert guide and researcher. Trek to waterfalls and natural swimming pools in the park. We spend another day touring a local coffee cooperative and participating in exchange activities with school children such as a ‘Dia de Actividades’ and ‘Despedida Celebration and Dance’.

DAYS 9-10: PANAMA CITY & TRAVEL HOME

Return to Panama City for our final night. Enjoy last minute souvenir shopping and our final celebratory dinner on the Causeway. Fly from Panama City back home. Our friends and family greet us when we arrive to share our experiences.
