High School Summer Program with culture and hands-on service

Hop on a plane to the pristine beaches and vibrant culture of the Dominican Republic. Get to work on meaningful community service projects that include home construction projects and youth education among the inland “Batey” plantation communities. When not working hard on service projects, you will have the opportunity to relax on white sand beaches, catch the beat of Dominican daily life, and enjoy this Caribbean paradise.

Itinerary

DAY 1-2: ARRIVAL & ORIENTATION

Arrive at Las Americas International Airport in Santo Domingo (SDQ), the starting point of your exciting journey with Global Works! Our experienced trip leaders will guide you through orientation activities, set expectations, and introduce you to the local culture. Get ready to connect with your group, embrace newexperiences, and make lasting memories. Welcome to Quisqueya! Your adventure begins now.

Go on a walking tour and discover the charm of Santo Domingo’s Colonial Zone, a UNESCO World Heritage Site housing the Americas’ first university, cathedral, and hospital. Stroll the walled city, delving into its historical roots as the earliest European settlement in the Americas. Later, head east to San Pedro de Macoris, your home for the week. Settle in and learn all about the bateyes and the upcoming service project you will be participating in as you prepare for impactful days ahead.

DAYS 3-6: BATEY COMMUNITY PROJECTS

Spend the next three days working alongside our partner community on infrastructure projects designed to increase the standard of living in the batey. Projects include the construction of cement homes which could consist of digging foundation, mixing cement, laying cinder blocks, plastering and/or painting depending on which stage the project is in. Other projects include building latrines, cementing floors, and educational exchanges with local youth.

Take a break from service on day 5 and drive east to Hoyo Claro. This stunning natural swimming hole is located in the middle of the jungle, surrounded by lush vegetation. The water is crystal clear and cool, making it a refreshing spot to take a dip. Relax and enjoy the tranquil surroundings. Spend the afternoon relaxing at the beach in Juan Dolio.

Spend evenings getting to know the community, music, local cuisine, and history during your time in San Pedro.

DAY 7-8: CATAMARAN RIDE & OCEAN SNORKELING

Wrap up your service project, say goodbye to the community and board the bus to Bayahibe; a beautiful coastal town with white sand beaches and turquoise waters. Spend the day exploring Bayahibe. Check out the Padre Nuestro Caves and go swimming inside of a cave! Then head to the coast to snorkel and enjoy various beaches. Spend the evening relaxing in this quaint Dominican town.

On day 8, hop on a boat and take a catamaran tour of Isla Saona, stopping along the way to snorkel and enjoy various beaches. Following your catamaran excursion, return to Santo Domingo by mid- afternoon. Take the opportunity to freshen up before our final celebratory dinner, which features a traditional dance performance!

DAY 9: DEPARTURE

We say goodbye to our new friends and to the beautiful DR. We head to the airport for our departure as we say goodbyes and share memories.

Santo Domingo Colonial Zone

Lodging is hostel-style accommodations in the bustling cultural center of Santo Domingo. Double rooms with private bathrooms. The space includes common areas well-suited to group orientation activities.

San Pedro de Macoris

We stay in dorm style rooms with 2-4 people per room in bunkbeds The lodging is located in our volunteer center on the second floor above the NGO we are partnering with. The space includes common areas and an outside balcony for group gatherings and activities.

Bayahibe Beach Accommodation

Dorm-style accommodations near the beach with plenty of space for group activities!
