Details & Itinerary
Your service adventure of a lifetime will take you beyond the tourist track and into the communities of the Sacred Valley. It is here that impactful service, fascinating indigenous market places, and exciting adventure activities will populate your journey. Highlighted by a breathtaking visit to Machu Picchu, this adventure is not one to miss.
The group flies together into Lima, transfers to Cusco, and takes a bus to Urubamba. We settle into our B&B for introductory activities, including a team scavenger hunt, that gets the group speaking Spanish and working together. We take an excursion to a nearby alpaca farm, and prepare for our upcoming homestays through language lessons and homestay role-playing.
Time to transition to our homestay families in Urubamba. For the next week, our friendly and hospitable host families will open their hearts and homes to us; you will quickly feel like part of the family! As most of the families do not speak English, your Spanish language skills will improve daily. While meals, evenings, and weekends are reserved for homestay family time, our group gathers daily to work on projects. We will collaborate with our host community and local schools on projects they deem necessary. Previous projects have included constructing playgrounds, building a community center, painting a school classroom, and working with local youth on educational activities. We spend our afternoons exploring the region and visiting such cultural landmarks as Pisac Market and the unusual Inca ruins of Moray. We also enjoy hiking, learning local arts and crafts, and engaging in cultural activities with new local friends. One afternoon, we will spend with families in a local indigenous community and experience traditional village life for a day. On the last day, we throw a final fiesta to celebrate our hard work and thank our new friends and families. Please see The Homestay Experience for more information on how we select our homestay communities and families!
We arrive by train at the small, scenic town of Aguas Calientes. Accompanied by a local guide, we rise early to behold the majestic lost city of the Incas. Nestled high in the mysterious Andes, Machu Picchu is a phenomenal and dramatic way to highlight this adventure of a lifetime in Peru!
We spend our final day in Peru souvenir shopping and exploring important cultural highlights in Cusco. For those who are heading home after the Peru section, we have a final celebration. We all fly back to Lima, then for those who are venturing to Galapagos Marine Service & Adventure program, will fly to Quito, Ecuador.
Want to continue the journey? This trip is designed to combine with Galapagos Islands Marine Service & Adventure!
The Global Works chaperoned Group Flight departs from Miami (MIA) for this program. Airfare is not included in tuition. Internal flights are included in the group flight cost. Please visit Dates & Tuition for group flight costs and Flight & Travel Arrangements for more information about travel days.
Adventure & Cultural Activities

URUBAMBA VALLEY HOMESTAYS
A 5 minute drive into town from our lodge takes us to a local school which serves as the meeting place for our homestay families. Students will live 1 or 2 per home (depending on preference) and have a private space and bed in their homestays. Breakfast and dinner will take place at home, while daily activities and lunch will be with our group.
Nestled at the base of Machu Picchu is the bustling town of Aguas Calientes. We take a train up into town and settle into our hotel for the night. Accommodations here feature clean and comfortable bedrooms in an idyllic location.
This former Inca capital is a tourist mecca and lodging options abound. Our choice of lodging is in a quiet, quaint hotel set back from the busy streets. It not only offers comfy rooms and ample group space, but its proceeds support a nearby orphanage which will inspire us during our stay and provide opportunities for cultural exchange.
