El equipo de Arizona partió temprano y se suponía que debía estar en la Terminal A a las 4:30 am. A medida que pasamos por la TSA, algunas personas hicieron que el personal de seguridad revisara su equipaje, pero finalmente, ¡todos lo logramos! Cuando llegamos a nuestra puerta tuvimos algo de tiempo para desayunar. Pasamos nuestra escala en Atlanta y llegamos a Phoenix a las 3:15 p. m. EST. Salimos del aeropuerto y esperamos para encontrarnos con nuestras guías de Global Works, Allie y Lauren. Nos dividimos en dos grupos de autobuses de apellido A-K y L-Z y nos dirigimos a almorzar. Para el almuerzo las opciones fueron Chipotle y Panda Express. ¡Todos teníamos tanta hambre después de no comer durante tanto tiempo en el viaje en avión! ¡El almuerzo fue el impulso de energía perfecto que necesitábamos! Después del almuerzo, condujimos una hora más hasta nuestro hotel. Durante el viaje, todos notamos lo arenosa y seca que es Arizona, un gran contraste con Boston. Una vez que llegamos al hotel, nos dieron alrededor de una hora para instalarnos en nuestras habitaciones. ¡Estábamos emocionados de compartir la habitación con nuestros amigos! Después de desempacar y explorar el hotel (¡hay un gimnasio y una azotea!) nos reunimos en el vestíbulo como un grupo completo: era la hora de la cena. La cena fue cocina mexicana en un hermoso restaurante llamado “La Indita Restaurant”. Probamos enchiladas de pollo, tacos, frijoles con queso y pollo. Nuestras comidas iban acompañadas de bebidas, y algunos de nosotros probamos la horchata, ¡que era muy popular! Una vez que nuestros estómagos estuvieron llenos y nuestros platos limpios, hicimos un informe como grupo, hablando de nuestros momentos favoritos y menos favoritos del día, así como qué esperar para mañana. El resto de la noche fue tiempo personal para nosotros para obtener artículos de última hora en CVS, usar nuestros teléfonos durante 30 minutos o simplemente relajarnos en el hotel. En general, hoy fue toda una aventura, ¡y podemos esperar hasta mañana!

The Arizona crew had an early start and was supposed to be at Terminal A at 4:30 am. As we went through TSA some people got their luggage checked by security, but eventually, we all made it! When we arrived at our gate we had some time to get breakfast. We made it through our layover in Atlanta, and arrived in Phoenix at 3:15 pm EST. We exited the airport and waited to meet our Global Works guides, Allie and Lauren. We broke off into two bus groups from last name A-K and L-Z and headed to get lunch. For lunch the options were Chipotle and Panda Express. We were all so hungry after not eating for so long on the plane ride! Lunch was the perfect energy boost we needed! After lunch, we drove another hour to our hotel. During the drive, we all noticed how sandy and dry Arizona is, a huge contrast from Boston. Once we got to the hotel, we were given about an hour to settle into our rooms. We were excited to be rooming with our friends! After unpacking and exploring the hotel (there’s a gym and rooftop!) we gathered together in the lobby as a whole group-it was dinner time. Dinner was Mexican Cuisine at a beautiful restaurant called “La Indita Restaurant.” We tried chicken enchiladas, tacos, beans with cheese, and chicken. Our meals were accompanied with drinks, and some of us tried horchata, which was very popular! Once our stomachs were full and our plates clean, we debriefed as a group, talking about our favorite and least favorite moments from the day, as well as what to expect for tomorrow. The rest of the evening was personal time for us to get last minute items at CVS, go on our phones for 30 minutes, or simply chill at the hotel. Overall, today was quite the adventure, and we can wait for tomorrow!

Hoy el grupo en Arizona pasó su primera mañana en el hotel! Realmente nos esforzamos por despertarnos temprano y lo logramos eventualmente. Fuimos a desayunar en Panera Bread y bronces fuimos al parque al lado para revisar nuestros acuerdos y políticas. Pasar el día en Borderlinks fue una experience reveladora. Aprendimos la historia de inmigración por los años en los Estados Unidos. Por el almuerzo fuimos a un restaurante/heladería dónde comimos helado para el postre. Nosotros nos despedimos de José nuestro guía de puro links hasta el jueves después de aprender de la brutalidad de la patrulla fronteriza (border patrol). Después de esa conversación larga y significativa, regresamos al hotel para un nado rápido antes de irnos a cenar. Para la cena fuimos a un restaurante el charro que fue la mejor comida hasta ahora! Estamos emocionados por mañana!

Today the Arizona crew had the first morning in the hotel! We had quite the time trying to wake up, but we got up eventually. We and to get breakfast at Panera Bread, and then went to the park to review our norms and policies. Going to Borderlinks was such an eye opening experience. We learned the history of immigration throughout the years in the US. For lunch, we went to The Hub, where we got ice cream for dessert. We said goodbye to Josue, our Borderlinks guide, until Thursday after learning about how brutal Border Patrol can be. After this long, and meaningful discussion, we went back to the hotel for a quick swim in the pool before heading off to dinner. For dinner, we went to El Charro, which was the best food so far! We are excited for tomorrow!

We left early in the morning since we had to meet someone. Today was the day we went to Nogales. Nogales is a city split in 2, one part in Arizona, and one in Mexico. We grabbed a snack and jumped in the car. We were on the road for an hour. Close to our destination we started to see the border, a huge tall wall that was incredibly shocking to see. Going to our destination spot where we had McDonalds for our actual breakfast. We spent a while eating and sharing. This is where we met our own personal tour guide, Manuel. He lives in the Mexico part of Nogales. We started our small walk of about 10 minutes to a spot where we were touching the border wall. He told us his personal story where he crossed to the US several times doing various jobs in California specifically doing farming, landscaping, and carpentry. He explained to us a very important story about a 16 year old boy named Josue Antonio who was shot 13 times by a border patrol officer. There was a case of an officer going to court but he was found not guilty supposedly, because there was not enough evidence. When the reality is that the judge had no knowledge about border control or the border wall in Nogales, Arizona and Nogales, Mexico. They didn’t want to use the videos or phones as evidence. Manuel also talked about how immigrants’ only goal is to come look for the American dream, and at the same time they are working in the US. The US profits from immigrants who pay taxes without receiving benefits. After reflecting with Maniel, we drove to the desert hike. We spent 30 minutes hiking trying to experience what immigrants go through to get to America. When we got to our destination we talked a lot about how we would approach immigration issues, with an open mind. We started our car ride of an hour and a half, and then went back to our hotel. We came back and went to the pool as a group, and then spent more quality time together. We had a very fun day and ended it off with eating pizza at the park.

Salimos temprano en la mañana ya que teníamos que encontrarnos con alguien. Hoy fue el día que fuimos a Nogales. Nogales es una ciudad dividida en 2, una parte en Arizona y otra en México. Agarramos un bocadillo y nos subimos al auto. Estuvimos en la carretera por una hora. Cerca de nuestro destino comenzamos a ver la frontera, un enorme muro alto que fue increíblemente impactante de ver. Ir a nuestro lugar de destino donde teníamos McDonalds para nuestro desayuno real. Pasamos un rato comiendo y compartiendo. Aquí es donde conocimos a nuestro propio guía turístico personal, Manuel. Vive en la parte de México de Nogales. Comenzamos nuestra pequeña caminata de unos 10 minutos hasta un lugar donde tocábamos el muro fronterizo. Nos contó su historia personal en la que cruzaba a los EE. UU. varias veces para realizar varios trabajos en California, específicamente en agricultura, jardinería y carpintería. Nos explicó una historia muy importante sobre un niño de 16 años llamado Josué Antonio que recibió 13 disparos de un oficial de la patrulla fronteriza. Hubo un caso de un oficial que fue a la corte pero fue declarado no culpable supuestamente, porque no había pruebas suficientes. Cuando la realidad es que el juez no tenía conocimiento sobre el control fronterizo o el muro fronterizo en Nogales, Arizona y Nogales, México. Comenzamos nuestro viaje en el van de una hora y media, y luego regresamos a nuestro hotel. Regresamos y fuimos a la piscina en grupo, y luego pasamos más tiempo de calidad juntos. Tuvimos un día muy divertido y lo terminamos comiendo pizza en el parque.

Howdy! We’re on day 4, so let’s recap! We started our day with a walk to the local Panera bread. We had breakfast there, and chatted about our experience thus far. But, we didn’t stay long; we loaded up the vans and drove to the Borderlinks Office, to listen to our speaker. Our speaker was a long time Tucson resident and activist named Leslie.

We had the the wonderful opportunity to sit down and have a conversation with Leslie about her experiences as an activist. We learned about the history and grass-roots origins of the modern-day sanctuary movement, as well as its struggles. After hours of conversation with Leslie, we said our “goodbyes” and “thank yous” and headed off the Tucson Museum of Art.

At the museum we had a workshop about immigration pathways. Shortly after, we had lunch. After lunch, we walked back to the museum for a tour by one of their education leaders, Leila. Leila led us through the museum exhibits and facilitated discussions surrounding the art work. We then had the opportunity to explore more of the gallery and share our ideas in a circle. After our museum circle discussion, we drove to the outskirts of Tucson to the mountains. We drove to a look-out point and had the chance to embrace the Beaty of the Sonoran Desert. In spite of the hostile desert terrain, Arizona has a level of beauty that is unmatched. Finally, we had a long anticipated dinner. Food was served, laughs were shared, and memories were made. Well, that’s Thursday, let’s see what’s in store for Friday! Toodles!

Hola! Estamos en el día 4, ¡así que recapitulemos! Comenzamos nuestro día con una caminata a Panera. Desayunamos allí y charlamos sobre nuestra experiencia hasta el momento. Pero no nos quedamos por mucho tiempo; cargamos las vans y nos dirigimos a la oficina de Borderlinks para escuchar a nuestro activisto. Ella era un activista y residente de Tucson desde hace mucho tiempo, y llamado Leslie.

Tuvimos la maravillosa oportunidad de sentarnos y conversar con Leslie sobre sus experiencias como activista. Aprendimos sobre la historia y los orígenes del movimiento santuario de hoy en día, así como sus luchas. Después de horas de conversación con Leslie, nos dijimos “adiós” y “gracias” y salimos por el Museo de Arte de Tucson.

En el museo tuvimos un taller sobre vías de inmigración. Después, almorzamos. Después del almuerzo, caminamos al museo otra vez para que una de sus líderes educativas, Leila, hiciera un recorrido. Leila nos guió a través de las exhibiciones del museo y facilitó las discusiones en torno a la obra de arte. Luego tuvimos la oportunidad de explorar más de la galería y compartir nuestras ideas en un círculo. Después de nuestra discusión en el círculo del museo, nos dirigimos a las afueras de Tuscon en las montañas. Manejamos hasta un mirador y tuvimos la oportunidad de abrazar la belleza del desierto de Sonora. A pesar del terreno desértico hostil, Arizona tiene un nivel de belleza inigualable. Finalmente, tuvimos una cena largamente esperada. Se sirvió comida, se compartieron risas y se crearon recuerdos. Bueno, eso es jueves, ¡veamos qué hay reservado para el viernes! ¡Toodles!

On Friday June 16, we first went to Panera bread to get breakfast. After everyone ate we travelled to where Josue wanted to meet us, and watched a video about gender. We then had a deep conversation about what we heard, and asked questions and shared comments we had about the video, where everyone voiced very thoughtful ideas. After that we went to the park for lunch where we ate some sandwiches. After that we went to Casa Alitas, a welcome center for asylum seekers. We then split into 2 groups helping the guests. The first group rearranged the cots so that each guest has their own space. We also talked to people by interacting, playing basketball, playing soccer, etc. The second group did organizing and sorting of clothes, shoes, towels, etc. The two groups switched out halfway and some people helped pass out food to the new arrivers. After we finished we went to the hotel and swam one last time in the pool, we went to dinner to eat papusas at a Salvadoran restaurant, which was a group favorite. Finally, we then went back to the hotel to sleep for the last night.

En viernes, el 16 de junio ,fuimos primero a Panera Bread a desayunar. Después de que todos comieron, viajamos al lugar donde Josué quería encontrarnos y vimos un video sobre género. Luego tuvimos una conversación profunda sobre lo que escuchamos, hicimos preguntas y compartimos comentarios que teníamos sobre el video, donde todos expresaron ideas muy reflexivas. Después de eso fuimos al parque a almorzar donde comimos unos sandwiches. Luego fuimos a Casa Alitas, un albergue para solicitantes de asilo. Luego nos dividimos en 2 grupos para ayudar a los invitados. El primer grupo reacomodó las camas para que cada huésped tuviera su propio espacio. También hablamos con las personas interactuando, jugando baloncesto, fútbol, ​​etc. El segundo grupo organizó y clasificó la ropa, los zapatos, las toallas, etc. Los dos grupos se intercambiaron a la mitad y algunas personas ayudaron a repartir comida a las personas que estaban llegando. Después de terminar nos fuimos al hotel y nadamos una última vez en la piscina, fuimos a cenar a comer papusas a un restaurante salvadoreño, que era uno de los favoritos del grupo. Finalmente, volvimos al hotel a dormir la última noche.
