Shore School New Orleans

April 29, 2025

Today, we arrived in NOLA. With the Global Works organization, we spent our first day in Armstrong Park having lunch, eating at Calas Cafe, exploring Congo Square, and touring a museum about Black masking Indians. We took lots of photos, learned about NOLA, and had fun with our peers. We then went back to the cabins and had a delicious 2-part dinner with Jambalaya and Crawfish Boil. We made good memories with our friends and enjoyed our first day in NOLA.

Today, April 30th, 2025, Shore Country Day School’s class of 2025 woke up bright and early, excited for a day packed with fun-filled adventures. Today we, as a collective bonded over hard work in the garden at Common Ground Relief where we planted wildflowers and native grass, and weeded the tree nursery. After a picnic lunch, we took a relaxing yet educational hike at Bayou Sauvage Urban National Wildlife Refuge and saw trees planted by Common Ground. Following a snack run, where two fishing poles were purchased to fish from our floating cabins, we enjoyed a fun boat ride through the bayou and learned about all of the natural habitat and wildlife. We returned to our cabins and we’re welcomed by Jimmy who cooked a delicious dinner for the second night, and treated us to shrimp etouffee and homemade cookies.

We thank Common Ground Relief and Honey Island Swamp Tours for teaching us about the NOLA environment. We all are different in our own ways; however, we all share the same common experience in togetherness and as leaders in NOLA.

The day started off bright and early when the Shore 8th Grade headed to Jackson Square. With a little bit a free time we were able to shop for souvenirs, explore St Louis Cathedral, try beignets at Cafe Du Monde, and walk along the Mississippi River.

Next, we went to the Louisiana State Museum where we learned more about Hurricane Katrina and the history of Mardi Gras. We then went to lunch at the Gumbo Shop and enjoyed a delicious creole meal.

After lunch we had more time to shop around or relax in the sunny park. While wondering through the streets we were surrounded by music, rich food, art, and many different cultures.

Our group then went on a short bus ride to Studio Be where we admired the work of muralist and social activist, BMike Odoms. Then we did a culminating activity based on the Plessy vs Ferguson case (which we had studied prior to our trip), art and social activism, and the impact of environmental disasters.

Finally, we wrapped up the day with a three course dinner and spent time having fun chats with our friends!
