First, we arrived at the airport (after our buses failed to arrive and we all had to carpool to the airport). Then, we went to get a bite to eat. We ended up getting Starbucks, because its by far the best choice and we headed to our gate. We boarded our plane, which was overall very smooth and chill. After that we grabbed our bags and headed to meet up with the Global Works people, they were super nice and guided us to our first destination, lunch. We had the choice of fried chicken, chicken alfredo, beef tips or pork chops. After lunch, we toured Old San Juan with Alvin and Julio (hoo-li-o). We looked at historical monuments, took a BUNCH of pictures, and had a BLAST!!!!! After, we went souvenir shopping around San Juan and got ice cream! Though we endured several rain showers, it was an overall very fun experience!
When we arrived at the Big Yellow House, we talked and organized our room situation. We came back down and had a tasty and tasteful dinner of chicken, salad, and plantains. We hung out a little and we then worked on our community guidelines. We talked about being respectful, having an open mind, maintaining a positive attitude and much more. We also did a few ‘get to know you’ activities and an activity about comfort zones. Then, we had free time, before having time before bed to shower and use our phones.

Today was the first full day in Puerto Rico, and we had a full day of activities as well. We started the day off at 7 in the morning with an optional run on the beach where there was a double rainbow. This was a sign of a magical day to come! At 8am we got a delicious breakfast. At 9am we went to Villa del Rio which was where the house we were building was. When we got there we split up into a few different groups who had different tasks. Some people shoveled the cement into the buckets so they could be poured up on the roof. To make the cement, people had to shovel rocks and sand mixed with cement in the spin thingy. After a full morning of work we ate lunch at Maria’s house. It was magically delicious! Then we started to work again in the afternoon. During the afternoon work we finished work with cement so we won’t have to work with cement for the rest of the trip. The best part of today was after we finished the work when we went to the beach and swam until 5:30. At 6 we ate dinner which was pasta. After dinner we did a groups activity which involved talking about our experience in Puerto Rico. Overall this day was really fun and we can’t wait for tomorrow.

In the morning, Brady and AJ went on a beach cleanup. After they came back, everyone had a really good breakfast with pancakes and fresh fruit. After everyone was ready for the day we drove to Villa Del Rio. We worked on the house by laying rebar on the roof until 12:00. This was the last step that needed to happen before the next group can lay the cement. We had lunch at Maria’s again where we had chicken wings, rice, and beans. We finished our service work by having a talk with William and Angel about the impact of our work. After that we got on the bus and took the long drive Luquillo Beach where we are staying in Casa Coral. We had an appreciation circle. We tapped each other on the back to acknowledge their hard work this week. We had really good smoothies and good pizza. We were able to play games and go to the beach before we went to the salsa lesson where we were challenged by a rival salsa group. We all had a fun time dancing and all got to dance with each other.
