City Neighbors Schools: Puerto Rico 2026
Monday, May 11
When we first got off go the plane, the first thing that we did was to have a conversation about what the day was going to look like with the other school, and with the busses, getting our bags, and also getting food. After me and my class had gotten our luggage, we met with the teachers, and they told us more details about what we were going to be doing, what we were eating, and also what the weather was going to be like that day. Once we all got our bags and got to our bus, we placed our bags inside and went to get some lunch. We chose fried chicken or regular chicken with white rice and beans, or beef with another side. Because of how hot it was, some people decided to change into shorts.
Once everyone had finished eating we all went on a walk to see more the city, and learn more about what the city was like, how it came to be, and also who were some historical figures who helped make it the place it is today. After that we got gelato and went souvenir shopping. Then we came home ate dinner and talked about rules.
After we talked about rules all the students of the two schools found their rooms. Some stayed in there rooms and some of the boys went to play basketball and mostly walked around to chill. Something I’m looking forward to is working with the community on Tuesday to help work on someone’s new space for there home.

Today was the first day at the construction site. While there, we met a couple of different locals that really made my experience even more enjoyable. Some of the locals we met were William, Julio, and Eggy. Although there was a language barrier, they impacted the experience because they made working in the hot sun fun. Some examples of how they made my trip fun is how Julio taught u many tricks when it came to using the hammer and Eggy made a lot of jokes and was very humous. They both taught us how to communicate through the language barrier without having to speak. In the construction site, we learned how to use hammers and others tools properly to ensure our safety. The goal for tomorrow is to work twice as hard because things we will be working with are more complicated than what we worked with today. We ate chicken and white rice and we drank gatorade and water. Puerto Rico feels different from home, Baltimore, because the weather is different, as it has unpredictable weather like rainstorms, etc. at times.
