Wonderfolk Costa Rica 2026

We started off our day bright, burgundy – colored, and early in the PDX airport! After some heartfelt goodbyes and photos we made our way through security and to our terminal. We fueled up on Starbucks, McDonalds, and sang Ellie happy birthday before boarding our flight to LA (Shout-out Alaska!). During that short flight many of us indulged in the snacks, soda, and a chance to catch up on some much-needed sleep. We landed in LAX, and got the chance to have some downtime to charge our phones up, eat a delicious lunch (Burgers, Sandwiches, + more), and browse the fun shops. Our flight to San Jose was long but scenic! We got to enjoy the free on-flight Wi-Fi, streaming service, and most importantly sleep a-whole-lot more!! Now we’ve arrived in Costa Rica, tucked into our hotel, sleepy and excited for what’s to come!!

We woke up early after a late night, woke up and got ready for a delicious traditional Costa Rica breakfast: rice, beans, eggs, and fruit. We talked and enjoyed a beautiful view of the San Jose. After breakfast, we got together and discussed community agreements. Collectively, we valued positivity, understanding, encouragement, and engagement. Once we finished with agreements we packed pages and threw them on the top of the bus for a 3 hour bus trip to the San Carlos region—briefly watching some stray dogs pass before we left. On the way, we observed the unique architecture (short and colorful buildings and the honorable mention of a curvy, light blue slanted roof that looked like a wave) and the amazing rainforest landscape in Costa Rica. The bright and vibrant flowers and beautiful nature makes up one of our best memories here with Wonderfolk. Halfway through the drive we had food at Mi Rancho and enjoyed a variety of different worldly cuisines. Then we arrived at La Casa Crisley, where we will be staying for four nights. Immediately, we befriended the little girls on the farm, letting them do lots of henna designs on our arms and one of our male identifying member’s makeup. We met their dog, and some of us played tag while the majority played card games before we all watched Mexico v Englands World Cup Game (very close). Finally, we had a traditional dinner of beans, meat, and salad, and did a group reflection about stepping out our comfort zones. It was an amazing day and we are excited for what will be coming up next (cow milking)!

Early morning we were awakened by the option of milking cows, or the extra hour of sleep in the 22 degree AC. Majority chose to join the excitement of milking, while the rest slept, and honestly we don’t blame them, the long hours of sleep after the humidity we faced was well needed.
Milking the cows felt easy to some and difficult to others. We were instructed to shape our hands into a ring, and follow suit with the rest of our fingers while not gripping hard. We milked 1/4 of a bucket, it may look easy with demonstration from Crisley, but it humbled us badly. Devlin was a pro with getting milk for our cheese however, it was still fairly difficult. We had the chance of drinking the milk from mama cow herself, and it was sweet. We also took pictures with its baby, and the papa cow himself.
Crisley showed the history of his farm, and taught us the important lesson that “During a crisis, do not panic, it is an opportunity to grow,” especially with the hardships he faced with the pandemic and economy. He allowed us to assist with planting bean seeds, having a tour of his farm, and allowing the students to be the outcome of helping as 24 people compared to four farmers themselves, showing how important the farm is to communities and those it serves. After hearing about the rise demand in milk and cheese, we were able to eat an authentic Costa Rican lunch of nachos, followed by making homemade cheese and leisure activities of stretching and a competitive game of uno, Ellie calls “Power Uno”. We were able to assist with homemade cheese by the repetition of rolling the freshly pulled cheese like a baseball by folding inward, and alternating as you go down. We all had fun learning, taking advantage of new opportunities, with a balance of pool time, game activities, shopping at a local Walmart, and a visit to a lychee vendor after a debate on the pronunciation of it.
Afterwards, we were able to help Crisley plant seeds, and took a visit to the baby sloth in the tree we had trouble finding earlier. In previous times, it was told that these sloths are rare to find when other groups like us visit their farm. And then, we had a dinner of spaghetti with high energies of laughter, jokes, and complaints of the humidity. Julie, one of our cooks, had her 25th birthday today. We all wrote her a card and sang happy birthday. Quickly after, we were able to learn how to line dance, and dance with the community. We also were able to karaoke and get closer together. Altogether an amazing day!

The earliest morning since the trip started, we had to be up before 6 am. Most people woke up around 5:20-5:30 am. For breakfast we had eggs, gallo pinto (rice and beans), with some fresh fruit. We had freshly made yogurt from Crisley’s farm. As soon as the clock hit 6:30 we had to be on the bus to be ready for zip lining. We had a one hour bus ride where some people were expressing their fears of zip lining and heights in general. Once we arrived we had to get the harness and helmets on, we were lucky enough to bring Crisley’s daughter on the trip which made us 21 students in total. She is only a Spanish speaker and understands some English, everyone tried their best to communicate with her and make her feel apart of our cohort. As we were on the bridge waiting for people to get strapped up some people started expressing their feelings of fear and anxiety. It was our first time zip lining and for most as well, after the first zip lining many were expressing how they actually enjoyed it so much and wasn’t as bad as pictures. Most people got an adrenaline rush.
Once zip lining was done we sat at the restaurant and watched the Argentina vs Egypt game for a bit while enjoying the view from up high. As we were leaving we went into two buses and got ready for the hot springs resort which was a 15 minute drive. The resort was so beautiful and naturalistic it had one pool that contained natural hot spring water and another that felt like a hot sauna and had a gorgeous view. Some stayed in the natural hot springs enjoying the bubbling water and others went to the hot spring pool. We had lunch there and freshly made drinks. Bahia and I got a virgin piña colada and for food we got rice and chicken with fries and a chicken sandwich which were really delicious.
Once we left we shopped around the town of La Fortuna for a few hours and some people bought treats, souvenirs, and made friends with a local man who taught us how to play his flutes. Then we came back to Crisley’s farm where we an hour break of fun time, some went for a run and other into the pool to cool off from the humidity. Dinner was right after and we ate rice and beans with salad and the option to get pork or chicken, dinner was amazing! Crisley’s farm always makes sure to have freshly made juice with every meal which is very appetizing, the juice is made from everything on his farm as well as most of the food we eat.
After eating we saw a folklórico performance that Crisley’s daughter was a part of and at the end we all were able to join in on the fun and dance with them. It was an amazing experience since they danced with their traditional clothing and music. After we got free time where some people went into the pool once again, played with the kids, talked with peers, or went to bed. Shout out to our sisters – Sumaia, Vansssa, jasmine and Maria, miss you a lot!

Today, we ate breakfast at 7:30 am, which consisted of the option between a chicken empanada or a cheesy empanada, eggs, and fresh pineapple and mango. After breakfast we got on the road by 8:30 to head to the chocolate farm called Two Little Monkeys. We get the lucky opportunity to tour the farm, learn how to make chocolate, along with actually making some fresh chocolate ourselves. We learned to turn cacao beans into chocolate by first fermenting the beans and then they roast them and ground them up and add other ingredients like sugar, and milk and then they mix it up to make chocolate! I would say the important thing they wanted us to understand is that cacao and chocolate are not the same thing. Cacao is bitter and doesn’t really taste like what you think it would. After learning how to make chocolate, we got to try some hot chocolate and a special drink called the drink of warriors that had cayenne, cinnamon, pepper, turmeric, and cacao of course. It’s called the drink of warriors because only warriors could drink it a long time ago and they would every morning. We then got to make our own chocolate with our own designs and we could put whatever we wanted in it. I would say it is easily the best chocolate I have ever had. We then got to try a some fresh sugar cane that we used the juice for a drink that had lime and salt in it as well, I thought it was super yummy. Then we toured the farm and saw a sloth and some other plants as well. Lastly we went to the gift shop and got a ton of stuff. We then headed back to the Crisley’s which took about 30 minutes for lunch. We ate breaded fish with assorted veggies and mashed potatoes which was muy delicioso. Next we drove to the rehabilitation center for animals. We Interacted in multiple things from sightseeing the different animals: white face monkey, parrots, spider monkeys and many more. After about an hour and a half we began the next part of the tour which involved creating food for the different monkeys and split the lunch equally by number of monkeys to a cage. Finally we fed them to see the reactions which were surprising as they were quick to get to their prize(food). Lastly we went on a night walk and found many intriguing animals. We saw red faced frogs and bull frogs. We also saw a sloth towards the end which was rad.

Today marked a special day for Wonderfolk, our days at Casa Crisley have ultimately come to a conclusion! This marks a bittersweet goodbye as we will miss the amazing care and hospitality that our friend Crisley has given us, we will forever be thankful for the investment he put into each and one of us in which has delivered an amazing impact for Wonderfolk. We started our morning a little later than usual with pouring rain having breakfast at 8:30 AM. This rain didn’t stop Wonderfolk but may have put some fear in us as to get to Poco Sol, our new destination, the mountain road we needed to take is notorious for flooding especially during heavy rain, meaning there was a chance that we would need to hike approximately 4 miles uphill.
Around 11:30 we arrived to Poco Sol and luck was on our side because despite heavy rain no hiking was needed, the cars were able to make it. Arriving in Poco Sol our journey begins with a meal of arroz con pollo to satisfy our hunger and give us energy for the community service up ahead, and a presentation by a passionate worker named Raquel which helped us understand the purpose of the “why” we were called here to offer our services and gratitude to Costa Rica which so far has been treating us so well. The transition from Crisley’s house to the Poco Sol cabins was smooth but drastic for many as we were hit with much cooler temperatures, altitude, and the adaptation to living in a literal cloud in the sky. Something funny but important we now have to do is checking for snakes or frogs upon opening the toilets. So far, being here has allowed many to learn a lesson about taking initiative to take care of our community. After lots of time to soak in the moment the day has finally come to an end with some pasta dinner accompanied by laughter and fun. Tomorrow we look forward to initiating our service and purpose in doing forest enrichment work helping rangers do their job. Everyone misses their families and friends and are eager to see them again, many have had thoughtful shopping buying gifts for loved ones.

We started our day early for breakfast at 7:00 am with clouds being our view. Our breakfast followed with eggs, yogurt, coffee and some orange juice. We then headed to our groups to start service and despite it being rainy and foggy, we were thrilled to give back to Costa Rica since it has been giving us love for the last the couple of days. The groups cleared rocks and debris with shovels in order for the trails and rivers to flow and avoid flooding faster. It was raining, tiring, and hot however this didn’t stop us from giving back to the Costa Rican community and environment. After four hours of hard work we broke to have lunch and had fish, potatoes, lettuce, beans, rice and lemonade for our drink. After we finished eating our lunch, we were told that there was going to be a delay in our service due to the weather being in-adequate. We then played games for a while and then the chefs made the most delicious bread one with nuts and the other with chocolate. With the warm bread fresh out the oven and with coffee it warmed our hearts, while it poured outside. After eating multiple slices of the bread and drinking coffee, we then collected ourselves and our items to go and continue our services out in the trails, we combined the four group into two—one team worked on clearing leaves from the paths to make it safer while the other made trenches to drain out the water so it doesn’t flood. After doing services for an hour and half, our time was up and it was time for dinner and to get ready for tomorrow’s home stays. Today’s lesson taught us to keep a positive attitude and to always keep going even when tired because Wonderfolk always finishes what we started. We ended on a positive note knowing we did impactful service and helped the park rangers. The group leaders then gave us time to shower and get ready for dinner where we had nachos, we also taught fellow Wonderfolk students Spanish phrases. Finally, we ended the night with a fun game that required team work.

Its our last day in Bosque Eterno de los Niños, we woke up to the beautiful view of the forest. Watching the hummingbirds fly from purple flower bush to purple flower bush. Hearing all the different sounds of birds and bugs that calm me. To seeing all the different kinds of bushes and trees that I wouldn’t even know what to call. And far far away seeing the tree my group walked to that looks like it belonged in the Lion king movie. We had a calm slow morning and had opportunities to buy souvenirs. As we get ready to leave Pocosol we are preparing for our home stays, I am personally really excited to be there because I miss my younger siblings and I really hope I get a home with younger kids.
We are now in the bus on the way to lunch, and then on the way to our home stay families. I’m feeling slightly nervous for it, I’ll be able to communicate with my home stay family enough to be able to survive, but I’m worried I’m going to accidentally say something wrong, or disrespectful. One of our biggest challenges on this trip has been the language barrier. Not being able to find the words to communicate your needs, emotions, or wants is so difficult, especially if you aren’t able to ensure you’re being respectful and polite. Despite the nerves, I’m really excited for the opportunity to connect with people from a different culture.
Lunch ended up being at an awesome restaurant that cooked with wood fired stoves. They also had souvenirs and desserts that we were able to enjoy. After lunch we got back on the bus and took a 30 minute drive to the town center where we were warmly greeted by all of the homestay families. We then learned who would be our homestay partners and we were all really excited to meet our families. Once our groups were assigned to our individual families, we all took pictures and said our goodbyes. Excited for more community service tomorrow!

After yesterdays two hour bus ride and a stop for lunch, we arrived in San Carlos. We all met our host families and our home for the next few days! I got homed with two other peers and we got an incredible lady, Carmen. Others got eighty chickens, one got the cutest wiener dog, one with nine host siblings, another with horses and a beautiful pond with fish. Waking up today we all got fed amazing breakfasts, some got cinnamon rolls, others eggs, homemade tortillas, fresh fruit, and most importantly the best fresh juice ever! After spending breakfast in our homes we all got ready to start community service around San Carlos. This community is very close, so some walked. I personally enjoyed walking with my host mom and peers because it was a beautiful walk and we enjoyed talking. We all arrived at the community center to start our service. Before we began service we got a chance to connect with our peers and share our amazing home stay experiences so far. Our community service begins with digging dirt and plants growing through concrete and sanding benches to paint over for our space. While we were digging plants we saw two Macaws!! We learned at the rehabilitation center for animals, Macaws pick one partner for life and we saw one pair. We finished up our first day of service work around 12. We all took a group field trip across the street to get some refreshing beverages. For lunch today we are all getting surprised! Our host families are bringing us each different lunches to our community space. Some had gallo pinto, fresh fruit, potatoes and some had yuca. Afterwards many gathered for a group game of soccer. We all hung out and talked until Randal came. Randal is an amazing dance instructor. He taught us Bachata, Salsa and Merengue. We all had a blast dancing solo and dancing with a partner! I got to dance with my friend Elizabeth and I had lots of fun. Lastly we all got together and made donuts! We got to cut our own dough, fry them, and decorate them. They were very yummy. For the rest of the night we will be at our homestay and enjoy dinner and some rest.I’m so insanely grateful for this beautiful experience I’ve been able to be apart of. I want to thank my incredible parents Lori and Gary, also the best brother Bryson! I miss and love you!

Good morning everyone, this is Kenneth and Ezana here with your daily Costa Rica blog. Today, we woke up 7 A.M. and started off our day with gallo pinto, eggs, avocado, and a cup of coffee. We got all ready to meet at el Centro, and finish our community service work. We continued our work with moving the rocks that we would use for the new concrete structure that we are building, and moved on from sanding to glazing the benches and wooden furniture from yesterday. A frog even terrorized our glazing room for a bit before it escaped back into nature. For lunch, we sat down and enjoyed home cooked meals like soup, shrimp fried rice, and salad with our homestay families. We relaxed afterwards, shared laughs and stories for a while, and even played some football with the local kids that ended with a crazy downpour. I discovered that even after not playing soccer for awhile, I still was a pretty good goalie. Afterwards, we went back to our homes and exchanged gifts, played with pets, and had our final chats with them. At the Despedida del comunidad El Futuro, we all showed up in our most formal clothes and donned matching leis for the Hawaiian themed party. We had our last dinner with the community and then put our fresh salsa moves to work in el Centro. People were dancing until sore in the knees. Seeing as it’s our last night with our homestay families in El Futuro, we all had mixed feelings about saying goodbye to our welcoming family and community. We are so grateful to all of the host families for welcoming us into their homes and we’ll forever remember their warmth and hospitality. Vamos a la playa mañana!

It’s truly so crazy how much time flies! It was just three days ago when we we’re pulling up to a building full of families ready to meet us. We spent only a few days with them but those days were unforgettable and will live forever with us. Sadly the time had came for us to say our goodbyes to families it’s crazy how just a few days can make so many people emotional. After many photos and even more hugs, we started to load onto the bus. Lets just say the 5 hour bus ride had its twist and turns it started, with lots of bumpy roads and a few stomach aches. Then, we had a stop to get snacks and to use to bathroom after began the rest of our ride. Many of us fell asleep but soon woke up because we had arrived at a restaurant for lunch. It was kinda buffet style and the food was great but what was even better was the gift shop! It had everything from jewelry to flips flops. After the buffet we had a 2 1/2 hour ride to our hotel , Playa Aparta Luna , let’s just say our playlist did not disappoint! The whole bus turned into a choir that needed auto tuning. When arrived at the hotel everyone got assigned to rooms and had a 30-45 min break until Dinner. After the many hours on the bus we were all very excited to eat. Many of us finished all our food in no time! We arrived back at the hotel, tummies full and many ready to swim and play games. The break after dinner consisted of UNO, drawing, swimming and obviously laughing, socializing and having fun. The hotel was such a fun break from doing community service, facing challenges, and of course the bugs! We loved on Costa Rica and now it’s time for Costa Rica to love on us! We’re truly excited for the adventures tomorrow’s episode brings us. And as Costaricans would say, Pura Vida and most importantly buenas noches a todos!
As much as the trips have been fun we can’t help but shout out the people we’ve been missing!

It’s a hard pill to swallow that we began our last adventure of our Costa Rica trip with spending time at the Uvita Beach, with endless memories embedded into a group of diverse students who have an endless joy of all the new experiences we were able to take part in. Our students, Wonderfolk 2026 cohort have gotten used to the 8am breakfast times, incomparable to most our routines back home in Oregon, we’d be slumped the heck out. Just like the previous restaurant “Tex-Mex,” we have a lil VIP section for ourselves, with witnessing them open & lock with their keys, had me feeling a little special with our buffet style eggs, octopus sausages, fresh fruit incomparable to Oregon, orange juice, fresh tea, but of course, there was was something for everyone, even our vegan trip chaperone Helen. Our 15 minute time crunch was approaching with rushing to the hotel rooms, getting changed, and meeting as a group with last minute runs back to the rooms, sunscreen to prevent sunburn & a PERFECT tan line. We walked 5-7 minutes to the Uvita Beach with many nice views, and jokes on our way there with chats whether or not we can swim, who the best swimmer is, and beach talk until we reached our destination met by 4 instructors. We waited for our fifteen minute lesson, where many people wrote their names, “Wonderfolk,” and Costa Rica on the sand, snapped pics, and trying to practice what we felt like the form was. The instructors met us by drawing lines for us to be given directions, practiced our forms with sand all over our body, and figuring out our groups based on skill level. The students also got their workout in with learning how to carry the heavy surf boards as we got our steps in. We figured our groups, went towards the water, and tried repeating what was taught to us in that short amount of time, while trying our best to catch waves, being a good sport about the falls we needed to take, and the cautiousness of walking with the stingrays everywhere. Many people got out of the water for various reasons and ran back to it after the encounter of iguanas in the area, even a chameleon. We were able to take pictures of the beautiful beach, have an hour of tanning, and to enjoy the morning swim. We had lunch at Restaurante, where we were able to watch the Argentina vs England game with fans from both sides (you know how crazy fans go for those two) Bellingham & Messi. Our own student Isa, who is Argentine, was rooting for her country, and was running over there to hug random fans all with the commonality of the celebration of Argentina winning, afterwards, we were able to reward ourselves with shopping at a Costa Rica style “Walmart” which allowed the students to get their own variation of snacks, beauty products, etc, and spending a lot of free time in the pool with music, yapping, with pizza.
The trip leading up to the first day of the beach was filled with even more endless memories for loving Costa Rica, and beaming an opportunity for it to love us as well.
And as our goodbye to it approaches, it’s important to acknowledge those families, friends, those who wrote those letters of recommendations, and paving a pathway for us to be able to have this experience, especially with surfing (only 10% of the population has done it), and we were able to do it. Soon will be seeing our loved ones again!

With only a couple of days left of our Costa Rica trip, we started the day at 8:00 am for breakfast at the local Tex – Mex restaurant by our hotel. We had toast with guava jam, eggs and fruit! After breakfast we headed back to the hotel to get ready to go shopping to a town called La Dominical with many small businesses which included a kids store with an interactive treehouse, a fancy yoga/spiritual place, MANY shops with swimsuits and tourist trinkets. Some peers supported them by buying fresh coconut water and souvenirs for our families and friends! Half of the cohort went back to the beach while the others chilled in the pool. Some even tanned for that nice golden glow from the sun! It was a beautiful time to spend one of our last days with warm water and beach waves or fun games in our hotel pool. Our time before a very special dinner was spent getting ready for the nice beach view that was expecting us. The girls did each other’s hair and makeup while the guys combed and styled their hair. At first the entrance to the restaurant looked a little bit… questionable. But once we got closer we got to see the amazing lounge area with the most stunning view imaginable. You could see rocks & islands from so far and beautiful plants & trees surrounding the fences protecting us from the cliffs. We even got complimentary smoothies which was very much needed. Everyone watched the sunset as we took photos with each other and of ourselves to post and show our friends when we go back to Portland. We ate delicious food that was even more fancy than some of the most expensive restaurants in our hometown. Someone ordered tuna tartare and truffle pasta plated like it was Chef Ramsey’s own restaurant. We headed back to our hotel to do 2 last activities to start finishing up our time in Costa Rica. We first started writing letters to our future self in November. The 2nd activity was everyone going around saying one positive word about the person in the middle of the circle. It was a really heartwarming experience to get to hear everyone’s thoughts about each other, it brought us closer together and helped bond our connection to each other. It was a sweet ending to the start of our journey back home.

Final journal!
LAST DAYYYYYY 🤪🤪🥸🥸🥹🥹!!! We started each of our mornings off at our own pace with the option to catch up on some much-needed extra sleep, pack our bags, or enjoy one last breakfast at our local Tex-Mex restaurant that consisted of delicious fruit, fluffy pancakes, and a rich guava jam that we will most definitely miss. We enjoyed our last couple hours with AC, ran to the local supermarket for snacks, enjoyed some homemade smoothies (shoutout Hiab), and finally loaded onto our bus! We made a pit stop at Starbucks to look at their Costa Rican menu which included strawberry croissants, s’mores brownies, empanadas, and a bunch of other cool items. We stopped at a familiar buffet style lunch spot to enjoy a wide variety of foods accompanied by smoothies and crepes, then headed next door to browse souvenirs and explore their butterfly garden. After that, we continued our journey on the bus; we drove through the mountains of Costa Rica and enjoyed some amazing views and power naps. Finally we arrived at “El Mirador”: a delicious steakhouse with an unparalleled view. We took photos while waiting for our steaks, burgers, and pina coladas to come out. Then we finished off our last dinner with dessert (some cake may have been stolen…). Crisley, our host from the cheese farm, joined us for dinner and delivered fresh, TSA friendly, cheese! We said our goodbyes to Costa Rica and headed off to the airport. Grace and I have been so grateful to share this experience with such a wonderful group of people and leaders. This is goodnight because we finally got our phones back, see you tomorrow Portland 😱😱😱🥳🥳🤩🤩👏👏!!!
