What Makes a Successful Leader?
“What makes a successful leader?” is a guiding questions that we explore at the start of a Global Works Language & Leadership program. Our students define a leader as someone who, first and foremost, takes on challenges. A leader communicates thoughts and ideas clearly. He/she shows interest and respect for peers and other cultures. Furthermore, a leader actively participates in the decision-making process, actively listens in group discussions, is positive, collaborative, and most of all is supportive. In addition, a leader takes responsibility for his/ her own learning, sets goals, and demonstrates respect for peers. Most importantly, he/ she demonstrates a positive attitude consistently.
What Will Teens Do on a Leadership Program?
Trained Global Works Staff guide high school students who travel on all Summer Service Adventures Leadership Programs. Summer program destinations for open enrollment include, but are not limited to, Costa Rica, France, and Spain. If you are a teacher or group chaperone, your leadership program can be customized on any of Global Works Custom Group Travel destinations! Learn to work effectively as a team member and contribute positively to group goals. Take on leadership and teaching roles with peers; and take initiative during group tasks. Each group determines a “Leader of the Day”. The “Leader of the Day” plans and facilitates group discussions and reflection activities, and also takes an active role in meetings with community leaders and Global Works’ partner organizations.
In sum, traveling on a teen leadership program is paramount in today’s global society. Especially relevant, teens develop cultural competency, challenge stereotypes, recognize how perspectives are influenced by one’s own culture. Therefore, they begin to internalize today’s most pressing global issues.
