Puerto Rico Hurricane Maria Relief Resources

PUERTO RICO NEWS

In the wake of Hurricanes Irma and Maria, we’ve heard words of concern from many of our alumni students, staff, and teachers with questions about our community partners in Puerto Rico. Your overwhelming show of support is a testament to the personal connections and sense of community that Global Works has gained in Puerto Rico over the past 28 years.  Thank you.

We are grateful to report that we have heard from most of our Puerto Rican contacts and the people we have heard from are physically ok. However, the community we have worked with closely for many years, Villa Del Rio, is in particular need of emergency supplies and rebuilding.  Homes and structures have been destroyed and supplies are needed. We have created a gofundme page to raise funds for direct support of Villa Del Rio.  See Link below.

We are planning to return to Puerto Rico in 2018 with our student service programs.

VILLA DEL RIO GOFUNDME CAMPAIGN

The Global Works family has been deeply saddened to learn that our partner community of Villa del Rio has been devastated by Hurricane Maria. The community has yet to have been reached by disaster relief personnel and community members have been cut off from contact to neighboring towns and services, left to fend for themselves without the most basic of necessities. We are raising money to send supplies and fund rebuilding efforts as directly as possible to the community.

SPECIAL RELIEF TRIP

This is when Global Works does what we do best: step up, help out, and make a difference.  In addition to our student programs traveling to Puerto Rico, we would like to plan an adult/family trip to Puerto Rico to help with relief efforts. This would be open to Global Works adult alumni, leaders, students with their parents, and friends with a desire to help rebuild and support our communities and providers.  Would you consider being a part of this team? To stay in the loop email us at info@globalworkstravel.com. At this time we do not know when this trip will be possible since we are still monitoring the situation and gathering information from our contacts on the ground. We will send updates as they are available once we can put together the trip and be sure we can lend appropriate help.

HURRICANE RELIEF ORGANIZATIONS TO SUPPORT!

Tropic Ventures – a sustainable forestry and rainforest enrichment program in the southern mountains with pioneering experiments in sustainable rainforest ecology. They lost many trees due to the hurricanes. This is a Global Works community partner.

Vieques Love – a GoFundMe campaign collecting funds to support residents and non-profits based on the island of Vieques. Hurricane Maria caused catastrophic damage to homes and properties on this island, which is 7 miles removed from the mainland and lacks easy access to humanitarian supplies.

ConPRmeditos – a local non-profit that helps connect Puerto Ricans abroad to those on the island, which is collecting funds to help victims of Hurricanes Maria and Irma.

Our thoughts and hearts are with Puerto Rico,
